Something important I forgot to add: this workout is not for beginners. You have to have a knowledge of your body and how it responds in order to take advantage of the freedom allowed by John's program. As with anything in life, rote and systematic learning is required before one graduates to higher levels of freedom.

I was doing Pavels Grease the Grove workout all summer. The results were decent but not great. I switched up to tricon sets MWF and after only a few weeks I am getting far better results. I rest 3-4 minutes between sets now due to my age and tendons.

I have completely opposite thoughts on resistance training. As the late, great Mike Mentzer said (paraphrased): "What is the point of the exercise? If 10 sets is better, why not do 100?". The idea is resistance training is supposed to induce CNS fatigue and muscle failure, otherwise you're just "greasing the wheel" or practicing form.

I think hitting complete muscle failure on a given movement chain / muscle group roughly once or twice a week is the way to go. When I worked as a strength coach, I had amazing results with all experience levels on the High Intensity method.

Dan’s book — actual physical book — on this topic is phenomenally expensive, way out of reach. I’ll need it to unpack some of what he is saying, some of the terminology. Anyone know how to score a copy at a reasonable price? — not looking for an e-copy.

I've actually been doing this program for the past month or so from your recommendation..I really like it a lot! I think my squat form is getting a lot better, and I recently got back up to where my bench was when I weighed a lot more (not quite a PR but almost). I have to see it through to the end of course but I think it's having the intended effect. thanks again bro! 💪
