I know very little about the war; I think I’d heard that Tolkien supported the “bad guys”. This is an interesting and inspiring overview. Love the bits about Queipo de Llano and Moscardo.

Yes, believe it or not, Tolkien supported the Catholics of Spain over the people who were killing them! Must confess I get a little misty-eyed thinking about Moscardó. And Queipo de Llano is sheer daring. Wild stuff.

Tolkien and Peter Kemp were the good Englishmen, one Catholic and one Protestant. Sadly, C.S. Lewis fell for the propaganda that Republican Spain was fighting for Democracy and defending liberty from the “evil fascists.”
