It always seemed wrong to me the line from the Litany of Humility ‘from the desire of being honored, deliver me Jesus’. Turns out I had forgotten that honor has two very similar but crucial key distinctions between its two meanings I had not paid enough attention to when I started that prayer. The Church is absolutely right against the desire to be honored, especially because honored in this context means the achievement of recognition without substance behind it. The church says the exact opposite in fact about the desire to have honor. The substantial kind that does not get honored in a ceremony. Especially when our understanding of honor follows the Thomist idea of honor wherein honor is offered to God as the setting aside of all pride and earthly things in pursuit of righteous virtue. On the one hand to seek the laurels of men through honor is a grave sin of pride, on the other to seek the virtues of God through honor is a great boon to us all. Honor as St Thomas sees it is so powerful because it constantly points up. It asks you to do more, to be better, to never need the credit, to remain unceasing in charity, while simultaneously embracing it all with the humility to recognize that such honor only came about from God’s work being done in us. Honor is really important and no, it is not prideful to live with honor. It is prideful however, to receive honors in deceit without the actual honor to make one worthy of obtaining them.
